Languages - Spanish

Our Spanish curriculum ensures that, through carefully planned and sequenced lessons, pupils are able to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and that they continually improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. Over time, children build on what they know and remember so that they are able to write using a variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt. Our intent is that the teaching of Spanish in EYFS, KS1 and KS2 provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lays the foundations for further foreign language teaching at KS3.

Spanish is planned in half-termly topics and, where possible, purposeful cross-curricular links are made to other curriculum subjects. Vocabulary and sentence structure are regularly revisited and embedded so that new skills build progressively on what has previously been learnt. Curriculum enrichment opportunities enhance this provision.

Technology is carefully integrated into the curriculum, where appropriate, to encourage individual or collaborative learning and to support knowledge retrieval and assessment through a variety of methods such as low stakes quizzing.

Our curriculum drivers of growth mindset, community, environment and language development underpin Spanish, are embedded in teaching and learning and develop skills and attitudes that enable children to communicate with understanding and respect for other cultures.
