Religious Education
The intent of our Religious Education curriculum, informed by the Enfield SACRE, is to enable all our children to learn concepts from and about religion and worldviews, so that they can understand the world around them. Through enquiry based learning, we ensure our children acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of the world faiths (including principal religions) and views represented in Great Britain; their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of other individuals, societies, communities and cultures, to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and our behaviour, develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. The curriculum is further enhanced by educational visits to places of worship within our local community.
Our Curriculum Drivers of growth mindset, community, environment and language development are embedded in teaching and learning and encourage our children to enquire about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences.
Policy on Withdrawing a Child from Religious Worldviews Education (RWVE)
Religion and belief have become more visible in public life in recent years, making it important that all pupils have the opportunity to engage in Religious Worldviews Education (RWVE). However, parents or carers have the right to request that their child be excused from all or part of the RWVE curriculum.
Steps for Withdrawing from RWVE
- Formal Request in Writing: Parents wishing to withdraw their child must submit a written request, addressed to the Headteacher.
- Understanding the Curriculum: Parents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the aims and content of the RWVE curriculum. They will have the opportunity to discuss the program and their concerns, should they wish to do so.
- Scope of Withdrawal: Parents should clarify whether the withdrawal applies to the entire RWVE curriculum or specific elements. It is not necessary to provide a reason for the withdrawal.
Considerations for Withdrawal
- Curriculum Integration: While withdrawal from RWVE is permitted, parents should be aware that children may encounter religion, beliefs, and broader aspects of faith in other parts of the curriculum. These areas, such as history, PSHE, and community cohesion activities, do not fall under the scope of withdrawal.
- Spontaneous Discussions: Pupils may raise questions or encounter religious themes during discussions in other subjects. For example, topics such as identity, diversity, feelings, and emotions may be explored within religious and non-religious contexts.
This approach ensures that the rights of parents and the needs of pupils are balanced with the school’s responsibility to promote community cohesion and support pupils' understanding of the diverse world in which they live.
